Email will consume your precious hours if you don’t get it under control. Many times I won’t open email until certain hours of the day or in time blocks. This made me much more effective and I got a lot more accomplished. For a period of time I removed my email accounts from my iPhone. This was liberating. I really enjoyed it but I reverted back and now read email via the tiny screen and strain my neck with 65 lbs. of force.
But is email dead?
Many with social media blinders will tell you that email os old school but data suggests otherwise. The Radicati Group states the number of email addresses will increase to 4.9 billion in 2017 from 3.9 billion in 2013. We aren’t quite to one email address per person on the earth but we are gaining. I am curious to what the average is. If I count aliases and info@ account I have 23 email address. I really only read 3.
So can you get away from email with social platforms?
A company out of San Francisco, Asana, says you can. They want to create a more collaborative way to work. You can sign up for the service immediately. All you have to do is submit your email address. Uh, yes, give them your email address. You can’t sign up for Asana without an email address nor Facebook, Twitter, iTunes, Pinterest, Google + or anything else without an actual destination in order to reset your password and scan your contact list.
If there is anything else you want to know about email not dying, head over to www.emailisnotdead.com. Lots of relevant links over there. There is also a pretty entertaining presentation from Michael Barber Make Email Suck Less on how email rarely focuses on the person.
